Finally moved to Archlinux!

admin | January 20, 2010
Hello everybody!
I know I haven’t posted anything here for a while, but I’ve been very busy with college work.
Anyways, I want you all to know that I’ve finally moved to Archlinux. I did the change during my Christmas holiday and now I’ve been using it since then. I can have only good words for this distribution! It runs greatly fast with a very low resource consumption. I love it!
Maybe it took me a while to set it up, but it’s worth doing it. I learned a lot from this change and I’m willing to learn more. I have all the basic stuff working properly: wifi, graphic card with 3D acceleration, sound, touchpad, etc.
There’s still something to fix, like changing the backlight brightness up and down, because I can’t do it at the moment. I read somewhere that the nvidia drivers could be involved in that… well, when I finish the final exams I will look for it.
I promise some sort of guide for the installation of Archlinux, but I think it won’t be very deep because there is a great community behind this distribution. Almost everything you need to know is documented in a nice wiki [1].
That’s all for today my readers, see you all soon around!

Busiest Day ever!

admin | November 27, 2009

Hello!

I’m really astonished about this, this morning I found that I had 2 comments from people I don’t know. Which made me think that someone actually read this blog. A few minutes ago I received another comment, and I thought I should see my blog stats.. and there was my surprise! I guessed that there would be about 10 visits, no more. I’m not used to see many visits on my blog, as it’s not famous.

Well, the thing is that today I had 237 visits (by the moment), and I can see that most of them come from: http://www.tuxmachines.org/index.php?q=node/41413

I don’t know who put my last post In there and why. Anyways, that gave a huge boost to my blog, and I’m very happy of it!

I hope that all the people that visited me today, come back again to read my future posts!

Thank you all for this! Keep coming!

From Ubuntu… to Gentoo..? No, to Debian!

admin | November 25, 2009

Well my beloved readers..

After a few days thinking about my las post, in which I said I was planning to move to Gentoo, I’ve decided to make a step backwards and go to Debian.

I guess you would like to know the reason.. well it’s kinda easy. You have your linux, which you had happily compiled and installed, then you have your desktop environment, which you also happily compiled and installed, then you have your OpenOffice.org (for example), which you happily compiled and installed, then [...] Isn’t it awful? You have to compile EVERYTHING you want to install, that’s cool, but not every day, with every program you want in your system… Moreover, you have to manage the USE flags, which is the first time I’ve heard about it. You have to check and change them in every compilation process you have to do!

Yeah, call me lazy, but I’m not willing to “waste” my precious time with it.

Instead of moving to Gentoo, I will move to Debian, which I’m already familiar with, but with an interesting idea. My idea is to compile my kernel (get the latest stable release from Kernel.org), then I would like to compile my Desktop Environment, which will be XFCE. If I do all of this, I should have then an efficient system. What happens with the applications? Easy, if I see that I need special good performance on a program, then I shall go and compile it from the sources. What if not? Then use “apt-get”, as always.

Let me say that I’m willing to make a detailed following of this process, which I hope I shall have time enough to do it during the Christmas holiday.

Do you like my idea? Please, leave a comment below!

From Ubuntu… to Gentoo

admin | November 19, 2009

Hi there!

After a loong period without having news from me, I came here for a moment just to say one thing that has been keeping my head busy (among other things). I’m having that feeling that makes me want to change of linux distibution, I need something new, something with at a higher level, something that makes me “suffer” (in a good way) and makes me get my hands dirty. I want a distro that lets me fully customize it from the very first moment, from the very same installation process. After a few googling I’ve decied to switch to Gentoo.

This means a bunch of new “problems” I shall have which, at the same time, means that I shall came here with lot of stuff to post. I’m going to post all my impresions with my new linux adventure. I’m sure it will be a nice experience.

I don’t know when I’m going to install it, first I want to do some checks with a virtual machine, but when I get my hands on it, I shall make a new post, and explain the very first impresions.

Well my beloved readers (if there’s any), see you around, soon.

New CF 5.50GEN-D released!

admin | October 22, 2009

Hello to all!

Yesterday (October 21st), at 20h10m the 5.50GEN-D Custom Firmware was released at pspgen.com! Those are great news since there was some troubles with GEN-C.

Here goes the release changelog:

  • Now you can run 5.51+ games without doing any patch process to your games (UMD or ISO).
  • Now you can run protected games like FMA or Soul Calibur for example (UMD or ISO).
  • Now you can run demos downloaded from PSN (PlayStation Network), that requires 5.51+ firmware without the need of any patch.
  • Connect to PSN via MEDIAGO without installing any complicated utility (still in beta though).
  • You can use the XGEN updater to install 6.10 Official Firmware. If you set up a XGEN pandora you can go back to your Custom Firmware 5.50GEN-D later. I don’t recommend you to install an official firmware unless you have your pandora kit.
  • 480×272 AVC Videos are supported.

Some known bugs:

  • Option to accelerate the reading of MS is going to be ported to 5.50GEN.

To download the CF 5.50GEN-D, go to the end of the post. There is the link to the official site download. You’ll have to get registered to download it. Don’t be lazy, and do it! Is worth it!

By the way, I highly recommend you to set up a DC8 (Despertar del cementerio 8 ) because, with XGEN Installer you have the option to modify it (once installed) and turn it to install 5.50GEN-D instead of 5.50m33-6, great isn’t it?

I have already installed it on my PSP Slim and works perfect! Give it a try!

IMPORTANT: DON’T EVEN TRY TO INSTALL THIS CUSTOM FIRMWARE UNLESS YOU HAVE A PSP-1000 or PSP-2000 V1 OR V2. PSP-2000 TA088v3 AND PSP-3000 ARE NOT SUITABLE, YOU CAN GET AN IRREVERSIBLE BRICK. BE CAREFUL!

Download link: http://www.pspgen.com/custom-firmware-5-50gen-telechargement-190432.html

Note: Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click where says “Télécharger” and your download should start soon.

Wallpapers pack

admin | October 10, 2009

Hi there,

Here you have a pack of wallpapers based on the “biohazard” sign. I’ve made them this afternoon, because I got an epiphany.

You have 4 different models, so you can choose the one you like the most, and set it up as your wallpaper!

I set up the number 4 as wallpaper, I love it! (that’s why I made a HD version of it).

Hope you like them, and please, post your opinions!

By the way, if I find myself generating more stuff, maybe I will make up a website or something to put all the stuff there. Don’t worry, I won’t forget the blog :D

:: Download the wallpapers here ::

Edit: I made a PSP version of the wallpaper number 4, also in HD. I think it will match perfectly with the PSP. Tell me if you like it!

Steam games for free?

admin | October 4, 2009

Yes, that is possible!

The other day I was surfing the web for some games, and I remembered that once I had a Steam version that allowed me to play a big bunch of Steam games for free, but it didn’t last a lot. With every update made for the Steam client, that modified Steam didn’t work anymore. Well, the thing is that I found a new one, one that seems to work much better and, in fact, it works much better. You can download and play more than 60 games (maybe 100 too), and you can play them online if you wish! Of course, not in official servers but cracked servers (almost all the servers from Argentina are cracked). So I gave it a try, and it works like a charm. The fact is that with every Steam update, the modified client keeps working, and moreover the authors are releasing updates every now and then. The project is alive!

Well, as me, if you wish to play steam games without giving away any money, just go here and register yourself to see the post. Then, follow the instructions and you will find yourself playing within a few hours! (the hours you spend downloading the game itself!).

Enjoy it, as I will do!

Ubuntu Easter Eggs

admin | October 3, 2009

Howdy!

Have you ever heard what an Easter Egg is? Well, if you answered no I’m gonna tell you what is it. An Easter Egg is a little surprise that the programmer of the application has left there for fun. Well, it is better if you see it for yourself.

Gnome:

  • Press alt+F2 and type in: gegls from outer space
  • Press alt+F2 and type in: free the fish (to stop it, do the alt+F2 thing again and type killall gome-panel
  • Right click on any panel on your desktop. For example, the top panel. Go to preferences, then to Background tab, and select solid color. Now right click 3 times on any part of the sliding bar labeled style.

Firefox:

  • Open your firefox, open a new tab and type in the URL field: about:mozilla

OpenOffice.org Spreadsheet

  • Go to the first cell, and type in: =GAME(A2:C4;”TicTacToe”)
  • Go to the first cell, and type in: =GAME(”StarWars”)

Console:

  • Type in: apt-get moo
  • Type in: aptitude moo, then add the -v option, like this: aptitude -v moo. Now keep adding v’s to the option and have a good laugh.

Not from ubuntu, but also great:

  • Open a console and type in: telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl

Hope you enjoy them!

Oh, if you know more, please post them as a comment and I’ll add them to the list!

Play online emulators for free

admin | September 25, 2009

Got a dead hour? Would you like to spend it playing some games, and you are sick of flash games websites?
Deffs, I found what you need!

http://www.thesmartass.info

On this website, you can play some old console emulators such as Atari, Sega Genessis, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Sega Master System, Sega Game Gear, Nintendo, and DOS. Cool, isn’t it? But wait! There you have hundreds of ROMs for playing!
With no doubt, this is the best online games site I’ve ever found (perhaps there could be better sites, if you know any, please tell me!).

I have to add, that the site does not only have online emulators for playing, it also has some off-line emulators for download and many more goodies.

Now I’ll let you, Mr. or Ms. Reader, go to http://www.thesmartass.info and have some fun!

P.S: Btw, I’ll put the link on my blogroll, so it will be more accesible.

[Tutorial] Installing your USB printer in Debian with CUPS

admin | February 12, 2009

As I’ve recently moved from Ubtuntu to Debian, i needed to install and configure my printer.

Here I describe the general method install a printer, because depending on your Desktop Environment it may intall it by itself. But, anyways, I strongly recommend to install the printer with the following method as, in my case, my KDE 4.2 didn’t configure it well at all.

Lets start:

In the latest distros of Debian, the CUPS system is installed by default with your desktop environment, if you don’t have it, start from step 1 else go to step 2.

  1. $ aptitude install cupsys cupsys-client
  2. Now that you have the CUPS system installed, you’ll need to get a good driver for your printer. Go to http://openprinting.org/printer_list.cgi and look the manufactured and model and click show. Look for yours, and click on it. You’ll get a blue box with a place inside that says “Recommended driver”. Go and download  the latest .deb package.
  3. Once, you get the package, we proceed to install it. Open it with your preferred package manager and install it. Satisfy the dependencies if necessary.
  4. Now, open the CUPS interface by entering this URL on your web browser: http://localhost:631/ and you’ll see something like the image “Page1″:
    Page 1
    Page 1
    Page 2
    Page 2
    Page 3
    Page 3

    Page 4
    Page 4
    Page 5
    Page 5

  5. Now go to “Add printer”, and you’ll get “Page 2″. Just fill the form and click on continue. Now you are at “Page 3″, select your printer on the dropdown menu, you’ll see that the caption is something meaningful. Then click on “contiune”. At “Page 4″ you have a list of the drivers available with one highlighted. This one is the recommended by the system and it’s fine for you. Now click on “Add printer”. Now you’ll be redirectioned to “Page 5″. Here enter the configuration settings you want for your printer and click on “Set printer options”.
  6. Now there’s one step more. You have to add you to the group “lpadmin”. You can do that simply by running as root the following command on a terminal:
    $ usermod -Ga lpadmin YourUserNameHere
  7. Now you’re done! You have your printer completely installed and configured. Feel free to print something ;-)

As always, If you have any doubts or suggestions, don’t think twice and post a comment with your issue/suggestion.
